Dear 5K Families,
Mrs. Katnani’s Notes
It certainly did not feel like fall this week with all the almost-freezing temperatures! 5Kers continue to work hard in the classroom. This week we met with our little buddies for the first time! Students completed a pumpkin Venn Diagram to help them get to know their little buddies. 5K pairs up with 2D (Mrs. Davey’s 2nd grade class). We will meet multiple times this year and our little buddy meetings are usually a favorite among 5th graders!
Review of This Week
Math – This week we learned two formulas for finding volume (V=B x h & V = l x w x h). Ask your 5th grader to explain the difference between them!
Science – We have been discussing physical changes in science. Students are learning that when a substance goes through a physical change, it doesn’t necessarily change the substance. It will still have most of the same properties after the change.
Social Studies – Students were introduced to their Inuit project for Chapter 2 this week. We have been reading about American Indians, their migration to America, and the environments they chose to settle in. Students will complete an Inuit poster with three speech bubbles describing migration, environment, natural resources, and adaptations.
Writing – We continue to work on our archaeology paragraphs. Most students are typing. Once they finish, they will have their final conference and then publish their work by printing and putting it in their scrapbooks!
Important Dates
Scholastic Orders due Wed 10-24
Fall Fair – Sat 10-27 11:00 - 3:00
Unit 1 Math Test – Tue 10-30
Unicef Boxes due Fri 11-2
School Picture Make-Ups – Tue 11-6
Early Release – Wed 11-7 11:30 (No lunch served)
Miscellaneous
October can be a very “up and down” month in terms of weather. Checking the weather daily can help your child decide which clothes are appropriate. Being able to check the weather independently is a skill they should work on if they have not already mastered it!
Have a fantastic weekend!
