Mrs. Katnani’s Notes
I cannot believe it is almost Thanksgiving! These weeks are flying by! 5Kers continue to work together cooperatively and respectfully. Next week is a short week, so there will be no newsletter. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday! Gobble gobble!
Review of This Week
Math – We focused on fraction number sense this week. This can be a very difficult concept for students. For example, students worked on explaining why 1/2 + 2/7 does not equal 3/9 without saying how to solve the problem or what was incorrect. They had to use their number sense to prove that 3/9 is less than 1/2 and then reason that it could not be the answer to the problem because when you add something to 1/2, your answer should get larger. We also used fraction number lines and practiced fraction estimation.
Science – We finished up Topic 2 with mixtures and solutions. 5Kers learned the difference between the two and even tried to separate a mixture (chex mix) and a solution (salt water).
Social Studies – We continued our study of Explorers. See below for some fun “5K underwater explorer” pictures!
Writing – This week we finished our archaeology paragraphs and began putting them in our scrapbooks. This is a yearlong project that students will work on. They will be presented on graduation day!

On Monday, students will have the Get Smart About Art program. This is a parent-led program that highlights well-known artists and allows students to use their artistic talents to create a class art piece. Monday's presentation will include painting outside, so students should dress appropriately. It is possible that paint will get on their clothes and shoes, so please send them in clothes that can get a little messy. If they do not have an old pair of shoes, they can paint in their socks, but please send an extra pair of socks for them to change into afterwards.
Have a fantastic weekend!
