Mrs. Katnani’s Notes
Welcome to December! Report cards come home today. In school, each student was able to see their report card and ask questions if they had any. For many students, this is the first time they really make the connection between the work they do and the grade they get on their report card. At 5th grade, students should be starting to take ownership of their own grades. I am very proud of all the hard work that students have done this grading period. I also am loving how many friendships I have seen blossom this year! 5K is in a great place right now, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
Review of This Week
-Math: We took our test on Unit 3: Fraction Concepts, Addition and Subtraction. These tests will come home early next week. We began the next Unit on Decimal Concepts and Coordinate Grids by reviewing decimal place value.
-Science: We began Topic 4: Earth’s Water. We learned all about the water cycle and how water changes state as it goes through the different stages of the water cycle.
-Social Studies: We began Chapter 5: Routes of Exploration to the New World. We read about Christopher Columbus and his journey to discovering the America’s.
Writing: 5Kers began working on their next formal writing assignment: Famous Failures. Each student chose a famous person who has overcome obstacles to reach success. This will be a research-based writing assignment, so students will research their person and then write three expository paragraphs based on their research. This assignment will take a bit longer, but throughout it, we will really focus on the writing process (research, draft, edit, revise, publish).
