Mrs. Katnani’s Notes
What an exciting week we had! We had an author visit, special election lessons, and we had our first Compliment Celebration! 5K received all 10 letters in the word compliment, which means they received 10 compliments from teachers throughout the building! When this happens, they get to vote on a 30 minute celebration. They chose extra recess and we took advantage of the beautiful day yesterday to enjoy this extra time outside!
Review of This Week
Math – This week we practiced solving fraction number stories and comparing fractions using number lines. These can be very tricky concepts for 5th graders. For number stories, we emphasize that the number being split is the dividend or numerator and the number we split into is the divisor or the denominator. Students sometimes struggle to remember which is which. We will continue working on this skill throughout the entire unit.
Science – We finished our study of chemical reactions and completed our second Mystery Science! Students learned that after mixing our copper pennies with vinegar, we could add a steel paper clip that would attract the copper and become coated in copper. It was quite interesting!
Social Studies – We began our new chapter, which will begin our study of explorers. We have only just started because we spent the majority of Social Studies time this week discussing the election. Students learned about the three branches of government, specifically focusing on the Legislative Branch. They blogged about why Midterm elections are important. Check them out! www.5kkids.weebly.com
Writing – We continue to work on our archaeology paragraphs and Inuit posters.

A reminder that students can always check the website to see the homework assigned for my subjects. Sometimes they will even be able to print out materials from the subjects tabs. This would be very helpful if they ever forget something in school. Students should also have a homework buddy that they can call if they leave something at home or if they are not sure of what the homework is. Still looking for Halloween pictures! I would love for the kids to share what they were for Halloween! If you could e-mail me one picture of your 5Ker dressed up, I will share it with the class. If they are uncomfortable sharing, no worries! They always have the option to pass when we share.
